On a shoe with a pale crepe sole the effect is tonal and low key, which is what makes the grey the easier one to wear with tailoring. Charcoal, navy, black and white all take it without argument, and it does not fight a suit the way a tan suede shoe can.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBeing a mid tone, it shows a scuff on the toe more clearly than a dark suede would, and it does not tolerate being cleaned with water — a tide line shows on grey suede more plainly than on brown. Dry dirt brushes out once it has dried; a suede eraser handles the rest. Wear it with grey or navy trousers, dark denim, and knitwear rather than anything with much colour in it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Lo Top is a plain Gibson: open lacing, the facings stitched on top of the vamp so the shoe opens wide to get into, and no toe cap. The only decoration is a punched line running along the facing and vamp seams. It is built on Sanders' JOEL last, lined right through in leather — the lining is stamped Made in England — and finished with a crepe sole cemented to the upper rather than Goodyear welted, which is how Sanders build this range. Crepe keeps the shoe light and quiet underfoot from the first wear; it also wears faster than leather on rough ground, so this is a town shoe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eFitting is F (standard) and sizes run UK 6 to 12. Sanders recommend taking the Lo Top half a size up from your usual size — the JOEL last has a close, slightly pointed toe, and the half size is where most people end up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eCare:\u003c\/strong\u003e Spray with a suede protector before the first wear and top it up regularly. Brush the nap after wearing with a suede brush, and take scuffs out with a suede eraser rather than water — water dries with a tide line on a mid grey. Keep the crepe sole away from direct heat and brush grit off it rather than washing it.
