On a waxed cotton in bark, every crease and rub lightens against the surrounding surface, so within a couple of winters the jacket has visibly recorded the way it is worn: pale across the elbows, lighter along the front edge where it is unzipped, darker where it has been left alone. If you like a coat that looks used, bark gets there fastest of the three we stock.
It also sits differently in a wardrobe. Where black leans urban and navy stays neutral, bark reads as countrywear and behaves like it, sitting well with olive, moleskin, oatmeal knitwear, cream cord and tan boots. It is the least good match for a city suit and the best match for a Saturday.
The jacket itself is Barbour's Ashby: a rework of the Engineered Bedale in a robust wax finish, cut a little more tailored than the Bedale but with room retained for a jumper. The cloth is Barbour's 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton with a matte hand. It fastens with a storm fly front on hardy studs over an interactive front zip, and the zip is compatible with Barbour's optional zip-in liners. The collar is a sit-down corduroy with a throat strap. Original Classic Tartan trims the lining and the inside pockets, and there is tonal Barbour embroidery on the lower left pocket flap. Two bellow pockets, two angled handwarmer pockets.
Care: do not wash. Sponge clean only, and re-wax when the surface dries out. Barbour also operate a re-wax and repair service.
