Rather than the flat, dense black of a dyed cotton coat, the Sylkoil finish leaves a dry, matte surface that reads closer to charcoal in daylight and only settles into proper black indoors. Wear it for a season and the wax begins to move: the elbows, the cuff folds and the crease across the small of the back lighten first, so the jacket ends up with a faint grey bloom mapping out how you actually use it. Some owners re-wax to bring the depth back, others leave it. Both are correct.

It sits comfortably over a suit or a grey flannel trouser, it does not fight dark denim, and it is the one to choose if the jacket is going to spend more time on a station platform than on a headland. The Ashby is Barbour's reworking of the Engineered Bedale in a heavier wax finish. It is cut slightly more tailored than a standard Bedale but still leaves room for a jumper underneath, which is the compromise most people are after. Construction is 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton with a matte hand, a storm fly front with stud fastenings closing over an interactive front zip, and a sit-down corduroy collar with a throat strap. Barbour's Original Classic Tartan trims the lining and the inside pockets, and there is tonal Barbour embroidery on the lower left pocket flap. Two bellow pockets and two angled handwarmer pockets. The front zip takes Barbour's optional zip-in liners.
Care: do not wash. Sponge clean only, and re-wax when the finish starts to look thirsty. Barbour run a re-wax and repair service if you would rather not do it yourself.
