Under a grey sky the Ashby in Classic Navy looks nearly black; step into sun and the blue comes forward, warmer and softer than the black version ever manages. That in-between quality is why navy tends to be the safe pick when a jacket has to do a wedding, a dog walk and a Tuesday commute in the same week.
There is one genuine specification difference worth knowing. Barbour line the navy Ashby in a 78% cotton, 22% polyester blend, where the black and olive versions use 100% cotton. It is a small thing, but it is the sort of small thing a customer notices and we would rather say it than not.
Navy takes wax patina more quietly than brown and more visibly than black. Creases lift towards a chalky mid-blue instead of grey. Against tan leather, cream cord, olive knitwear or a mid-grey trouser it does the work that a navy overcoat does, without the formality.
Underneath the colour, the Ashby is Barbour's rework of the Engineered Bedale in a robust wax. Slightly more tailored than a Bedale, though not so slim that layering becomes a problem. The cloth is 6oz Sylkoil waxed cotton, matte rather than glossy, and it closes with a storm fly front on studs over an interactive front zip that accepts Barbour's optional zip-in liners. The collar is a sit-down corduroy with a throat strap. Original Classic Tartan trims the lining and the inside pockets, and Barbour's tonal embroidery sits on the lower left pocket flap. Storage is two bellow pockets and two angled handwarmer pockets.
Care: do not wash, sponge clean only. Re-wax as needed, or send it to Barbour's re-wax and repair service.
