The Chatham Sperrin Waterproof Boat Shoes Cognac is Chatham's winter take on a deck shoe, from the marine and country brand that has been making boat shoes in Devon since 1989. It keeps the moccasin build: a hand-stitched apron seam over the toe, and a leather lace running through eyelets all the way round the quarters. What Chatham change is everything underneath and inside.
The upper is premium leather in cognac, a warm mid tan-brown, stitched throughout in a contrasting cream thread, with three eyelets at the throat above the side lacing. Behind it sits a Sympatex membrane: waterproof, but still able to pass moisture the other way, so the shoe does not soak through in wet grass and does not turn into a plastic bag either. The sole is a heavy cleated rubber unit with deep lugs, a long way from the flat siped sole of a summer deck shoe. Inside, Chatham's sole spring Poron cushioning is anti-bacterial and takes the jarring out of hard ground.
The point of the Sperrin is that it is a boat shoe for the part of the year when a boat shoe usually goes back in the cupboard. The lugged sole and the waterproof lining make it a dog-walking and cold-morning shoe, and cognac sits more easily against tweed, moleskin and dark denim than a summer tan would. It remains a casual shoe; it is not for formal wear.

Care: Rinse off salt, mud and sand with fresh water. Feed the leather with a natural beeswax cream every few months. Air-dry naturally; never tumble-dry or place near direct heat.
