The Cheaney Barnes III B Pull Up Leather Chelsea Boot Brown is bench-made by hand at the Joseph Cheaney & Sons factory in Desborough, Northamptonshire. Founded in 1886 and independent since 2009, Cheaney is one of England's finest traditional shoemakers, making each pair using the same Goodyear welted construction it has used for over 130 years.
It pulls on rather than laces: elasticated gussets in both sides, a leather heel tab, and a plain vamp with no toe cap or broguing. It sits on Cheaney's 12508 last, rounded and generous through the toes, and is lined in leather.
The upper is brown pull-up leather, fed with oils in tanning so the colour lifts wherever the hide bends. Creases come up warmer than the leather around them, and the boot antiques into a two-tone finish with wear.
The sole is the Brit Grip, the B in the name: a cleated rubber unit made by Itshide in England, moulded with a Union Jack tread. It holds on a wet path without looking agricultural in town.
