Chromexcel is tanned over twenty-eight days through something like eighty-nine separate processes, and it is loaded with oils and waxes along the way. Two things follow from that. It shrugs off water far better than an untreated calf, and it pulls: bend the leather and the colour lightens where the oils move, then darkens back as they settle. In tan that movement is at its most visible, which is why this is the colourway people choose when they want a boot that ages in front of them.
Expect it to look different in six months. Chromexcel takes on an antiqued surface rather than staying uniform, and the tan will deepen through the flex points across the vamp while the panels stay lighter. It needs very little maintenance to do this; the oils in the hide do most of the work.
The boot itself is Cheaney's hiker: sturdily built with proper ankle support, sitting on a Brit Grip rubber sole made by Itshide for grip and wear resistance on rough ground. Built on the 12508 last, Goodyear welted and resoleable.
