The edges are finished dark, which frames the lighter face and stops the whole thing looking washed out.
It has a narrower brief than dark brown, and it earns its keep by being the belt that finally works with tan and mid-brown shoes. Stone chinos, mid-blue denim, olive cotton, a light grey suit in summer: anything where a near-black belt would lie across the middle of the outfit like a bar. Thirty-five millimetres, stitched along both edges, one suede keeper, squared brushed metal pin buckle. The buckle comes off on a cross-thread screw beneath the keeper, so the belt can be shortened if it runs long. Sizes S to XL fit waists of 28-30, 32-34, 36-38 and 40-42 inches.
The Northamptonshire factory closed in 1991 and the name sat unused until David Corben bought it in 2000 and put it back into production. What exists now is a design operation in Northamptonshire working with partner makers, rather than a factory.
Care: Lighter suede shows marks sooner than dark suede, so protect it from new and go over it again after a few months. Brush the nap up after wearing. Keep it out of the rain if you can, and if it does get caught, let it dry away from heat before brushing it back; drying it fast is what leaves a stiff patch behind.
