The leather is a dark red-brown, closer to mahogany than to tan, finished to a hard gloss and burnished deeper at the toe and along the outside of the heel. Against that depth, the raised apron running down the vamp becomes the first thing you notice.
Red-brown is a more particular colour than a mid tan. It is excellent with grey, charcoal, olive and cream, good with navy, and awkward beside a bright orange-tan belt or bag, which will fight it. If your other brown shoes are light, this is a genuine second colour rather than a repeat.
The build follows the black: an apron seam from the toe up to the throat, five eyelets, quarters laid over the vamp, gimped facing edges and a sole with real height to it. Inside, the sock lining is printed CHURCH STREET, the John White range this model sits in.
