A black brogue is the most formal shoe in this group, and it works by restraint. All the perforation that makes a tan brogue busy reads as texture in black, a matter of shadow and grain rather than contrast, so the Churchill can go somewhere a brown pair cannot: under a dark suit, to an office with a dress code, to a funeral. It is the closest thing to a plain Oxford that a brogue can be.
Five eyelets, an Oxford cut with the facings stitched beneath the vamp so the lacing lies flat, a full wing across the toe and a punched medallion. Black calf polishes to a genuine shine at the toe if you are prepared to spend twenty minutes on it, and it holds that shine longer than a tan does.
Construction is NPS standard: fully leather lined, Goodyear welted, built on the 10885 last in an F fitting. The Goodyear welt is the part that matters over ten years, because it means the shoe can be taken apart, resoled and put back together rather than binned when the sole wears through.
