Ordering it in acorn is a deliberate choice. Tan is the least formal colour and the capped Oxford is the most formal pattern, and the two pulling against each other produce a shoe that is smart without being sombre. It goes with a grey suit in a way a brogue does not, and with cord and tweed in a way a black Oxford never could. The finish deepens at the toe and heel with polishing, and on a plain cap that gradient is the only decoration the shoe has.
It is fully leather lined and Goodyear welted on NPS's 10885 last in an F fitting, so it can be resoled repeatedly. NPS have worked at Wollaston in Northamptonshire since 1881, starting out as a workers' co-operative and remaining one until the 2006 buyout that made the business privately owned. Solovair is produced in the same factory.
