Kenia is the darkest of the three Liams and the least like a conventional suede boot. It is a deep, cool brown — there is a grey-green undertone in it that stops it reading as chocolate — and the wax finish sits on the surface as a low, uneven sheen rather than a polish. In poor light it can pass for a smooth leather boot. Sanders' own name for the leather is Kenia dark brown waxy suede, and dark is the operative word: this is a boot for autumn and winter.
Waxed suede behaves differently from ordinary suede as it wears. The wax burnishes where the boot flexes, so the vamp crease and the edges of the gussets go darker and glossier while the flat panels stay matte, and the toe gradually takes on a mottled depth. Some people brush that back; most leave it. It also stands up to weather better than an untreated nap, which makes Kenia the most practical of the three for a British winter.
The pattern is the plain Chelsea one. No lacing, elastic gussets let into both sides, a woven tab at the heel to pull against, and no decoration anywhere on the boot — no toe seam, no punching, nothing but the shape and the seams that have to be there.
The Liam is Goodyear welted: the upper is stitched to a welt and the sole is stitched to the welt, so the boot can be resoled without the upper being disturbed. Underneath is a studded rubber sole, which Sanders list as Itshide or Dainite, rather than leather — more grip on a wet pavement and a good deal slower to wear through. Inside it is lined throughout in leather. The last is Sanders' 14292 and the fitting is F (standard), in UK 6 to 12.
Care: Wipe the boot down with a damp cloth and let it dry away from a radiator. Feed the finish once or twice a season with a wax-suede or nubuck conditioner, not with a suede spray designed for open nap. Brush gently, and only in one direction. Shoe trees after every wear keep the gussets from collapsing.
