A strip of pale natural leather shows along the edge of the facings, which lifts it further. Underneath sits a translucent smoke-grey sole with a thin dark midsole line, and a white woven SOLOVAIR loop at the heel finishes it.
Two versions of this boot are made: this one on the smoke sole, and the same upper on a coral-red sole. This is the version to take if you want the colour to stay in the leather. The tan is already doing enough work without a bright sole under it, and against denim, olive or stone the boot reads as a well-kept country boot rather than as a piece of styling.
Six pairs of eyelets bring it to just above the ankle bone, which is a genuinely useful height — more support than a shoe, quicker to get into than an eight-eye boot, and short enough to disappear under a trouser hem. The derby facings open wide, so it is straightforward to get on.
Goodyear welted and made in England at the NPS Shoes factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, by a firm making footwear since 1881. The outsole is stitched rather than glued, so it can be replaced when the tread goes. Tan leather is visible at the collar and inside the facings.
