Above it the upper is the same chestnut-tan burnished calf as the standard version — ginger and warm across the vamp, darker at the toe and heel where it has been burnished, with a strip of pale natural leather visible along the edge of the facings. Tan over red is a warmer and more coherent combination than it sounds.
Both versions of this boot exist for a reason: the smoke-soled one keeps everything in the leather, and this one puts a piece of colour underneath. If you like a boot to have a detail that only shows when you are moving, this is the one. Turned-up denim shows it off; a straight trouser hem hides it almost completely.
Six pairs of eyelets take it just above the ankle. Derby facings mean the boot opens wide and pulls on easily, and the shaft is short enough to wear under most trousers without bulk. A white woven SOLOVAIR loop at the heel helps it on.
