Ebony is not black here. It is a warm mid-brown burnished calf, chestnut through the middle of the vamp and darker at the toe and heel, and the rest of the boot is built around that warmth: aged brass-coloured eyelets, olive-brown laces, an olive webbing loop at the heel and a khaki-grey rubber sole instead of a black one. Very little on this boot is high contrast, which is unusual for a monkey boot and is precisely why it works.
Seven pairs of eyelets on offset facings give the short, high-cut, slightly lopsided front the pattern is known for, and the seam that curves from the toe up around the facings carries gimped zigzag stitching. Because the colour scheme is soft, the shape does the talking.
Brown at this depth sits happily with olive, tan, charcoal and raw denim, and it reads as country or workwear far more readily than the burgundy does. The burnished finish will darken over the first year with cream and wear; a neutral cream keeps the toe and heel shading visible, a brown one evens it out.
Construction is Goodyear welted. A natural leather welt is stitched round the boot with contrast stitching visible along it, carrying the outsole, so the sole can be taken off and replaced without the upper being disturbed. Tan leather lines the collar and facings. Made in England throughout, at the NPS Shoes factory in Wollaston, Northamptonshire, by a firm shoemaking since 1881.
