A mid grey suede, closer to slate than to silver, sitting on a white rubber sole. The contrast between the two is the first thing anyone notices: the pale sole gives a clean line at the ground and keeps the shoe looking modern rather than heritage. Grey is also a forgiving suede. It does not show the gradual darkening that catches out tan and snuff, though it will pick up scuffs at the toe and needs the nap brushing up if it is to keep an even, matte surface.

Barker took the Axel from a design in their own 1970s archive and rebuilt it on the 484 last, F fitting, UK 6 to 12, designed in Northampton. The upper is plain apart from punched brogue detail at the heel counter and along the toe seam. A full leather insole and lining sit inside, a full rubber sole beneath, and there is no branding anywhere visible while the shoes are on.
Our other Axel is the snuff suede, a warm tobacco brown on a matching tan sole.
Care: Brush after each wear with a suede brush to lift the nap. Use a suede protector from new and reapply periodically. Marks show more readily on grey than on brown, so deal with them early; a suede eraser will take out most dry scuffs. Keep the shoes on trees when they are not being worn.
