Snuff is Barker's warm tobacco brown, and in suede it lands somewhere between rust and mid-tan, shifting as the nap moves under the light. The rubber sole is toned to match the upper rather than left white, so from a few paces the shoe reads as a single warm colour and sits closer in spirit to a desert boot than to a gym trainer. Suede at this weight does not stay pristine. The nap flattens across the vamp where the foot bends and the toe deepens a shade with use, and most people find the shoe looks better for it after a season.
This is the Axel to buy if the rest of your casual wardrobe runs to brown. It sits comfortably with navy, olive, stone and grey, works with denim of any weight, and is the easier of our two Axels to wear with a tan belt. Against black it is less convincing.
The Axel is Barker's reworking of a sneaker from their own 1970s archive, built on the 484 last in an F fitting and designed in Northampton. Punched brogue detail runs round the heel counter and along the toe seam, and that is the only decoration on the shoe: no logo on the side, no contrast panels, tonal laces. Inside there is a full leather insole and lining; underneath, a full rubber sole. UK sizes 6 to 12.
The other colourway we stock is the Axel in grey suede, on a white sole and much cooler in tone.
Care: Brush the nap with a suede brush after wearing. Treat with a suede protector before the first outing and top it up every few weeks. Rest the shoes on trees between wears and keep them out of the rain, since snuff shows water marks readily and a soaking will lighten patches of the nap.
