This is the McClean without the suede. Antique rosewood calf covers the whole shoe, a mid-brown with a red cast burnished darker at the toe and the heel counter, and the decoration comes instead from a paisley motif worked into the leather across the quarters and the vamp. It is tone on tone. From across a room the shoe reads as a plain brown brogue, and the pattern only appears when someone is close enough to look properly. That makes it the subtlest of the three McCleans and, oddly, the one that gets remarked on most, because the detail arrives as a surprise rather than an announcement.
Being a single colour, it is also the most versatile. It behaves like any brown brogue with navy, grey and olive, it takes a proper shine because there is no suede to work around, and it is the McClean that will still look right in ten years.
Construction follows the rest of the model: a full brogue oxford on the 443 last, F fitting, designed and made in Northampton, Goodyear welted onto a full leather sole, fully leather lined over a leather insole, with hand-stitched detailing through the brogueing. UK sizes 6 to 12.
The two-tone versions we stock are cedar calf with blue suede and rosewood calf with navy suede.
Care: One material throughout, so this is the easiest McClean to look after. A neutral or tan wax, worked in and buffed, is all it needs, and a horsehair brush will lift the pattern without filling it. Do not let wax build up in the paisley; brush it out before it dries. Trees after every wear.
