The brass is what makes it, a small warm detail against a cold dark blue that stops the shoe looking like a plain navy moccasin. The upper is smooth calf with a natural finish, so it carries a low sheen that comes up further with cream polish, and on a white rubber sole the whole thing looks brighter than the dark brown version and reads more obviously as a boat shoe.
Navy leather is less usual in this style than brown, which is most of the appeal. It sits well with stone, cream and white trousers, with pale linen and with washed denim, and it does not need to be matched to a belt in the way a brown shoe does.
