Flint sounds like a grey and is not one. On the boot it is a pale warm stone, a light greige with sand in it rather than slate, and beside a genuinely grey suede it looks beige. That changes what it goes with: flint sits with navy, olive, cream, denim and mid brown the way a sand desert boot does, and will not do the cool urban job a grey suede does against charcoal and black.
The gussets have been left dark brown against it, which on this colourway is a visible decision rather than a hidden one: two dark panels either side of a pale shaft, two-tone from any distance. The sole edge is finished natural, a pale tan continuing the light half of the scheme, with the studded rubber tread John White specify underneath; the pull tab is the same flint suede. The shape is their elongated last, long and low rather than stubby, and nothing else is going on: no toe seam, no punching, no stitching that is not holding the boot together.
Pale suede is the least forgiving material in footwear and there is no point pretending otherwise. It marks, it water-spots, and road salt leaves a tide line no brush will lift. Treated from new and kept out of proper weather it stays respectable for years; used as a winter boot it will not.
UK 7 to 12, whole sizes only, nothing in between. With no lacing to adjust, buy it firm across the instep. The width is an F, what John White's guide gives for most of the range. Designed in Northamptonshire; the original factory closed in 1991 and David Corben revived the name in 2000. The warmer version is the Yates in snuff suede.
Care: Treat it with a protector before it leaves the house, and top that up often. Raise the nap with a brush after wearing, and lift dry marks with an eraser instead of water. Wipe the pale sole edge clean, and pack the shafts so the gussets keep their shape.
